Thangka paintings are said to have originated in the 11th century in Tibet. However, this art form has stylistic roots that run much deeper. Early Buddhist art evolved in the form of cave paintings, like the murals at Ajanta Caves in India and Mogao Caves in China. Soon, people began to paint on cloth as well.
